Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, as a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Team Teacher provides direct supervision to a group of children in the Program. Promotes positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all children in the program and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall preschool experience. Successful candidate will demonstrate the following: experience working with young children, familiarity with the State of Maine Early Childhood Learning Guidelines, Creative Curriculum, and NAEYC Accreditation Standards, current CPR/First Aid certification, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to the field of early care and education. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Exhibits a positive, professional attitude with the site director, lead teacher, co-workers and families. Role Models Positive language and behavior skills for children and staff. 2. Supervises a group of children. 3. Helps plan and implement a curriculum that is inclusive, developmentally appropriate, supports children's growth in all areas of development and consistent with YMCA values. 4. Works with the lead teacher to maintain classroom standards. 5. Promotes a warm, welcoming and engaging classroom environment. 6. Assures the classroom and all related areas are clean, safe and developmentally appropriate. 7. Attends staff meetings and completes required training hours. 8. Responsible for remaining up to date and following YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies. 9. Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Maintains confidentiality of all family information. 10. Interacting with children on their level. Playing with them, reading, imagining, creating and helping them achieve independent skills that are developmentally appropriate. 11. Helping children learn to problem solve and scaffolding their learning both academically and socially emotionally. 12. Clean up any potty accidents and reassure child accidents happen. Help children learn how to properly wipe. 13. Teach children how to dress and undress themselves if needed. 14. Teach children how to wash their hands. 15. Help children make healthy choices for breakfast and lunch. Promote independence by having children clean up after themselves. 16. Help children learn how to make their cots and take off their bedding if needed. 17. Sit with children at rest time, rubbing backs or helping children fall asleep in their preferred method. 18. Get on children's level and play with them. 19. Read to children frequently 20. Help children learn how to communicate more effectively by using words to express their feelings, needs and ideas. 21. Help children learn and develop at their own pace, individualizing activities as needed. 22. Help children explore their words with developmentally appropriate planned activities and spontaneous teachable moments. 23. Teach children academic skills and social emotional skills. 24. Prepare children for kindergarten focusing on writing, math, language arts and how to be a responsible member of a classroom community. 25. Always offering hugs and comfort whenever needed or wanted and never forced. 26. Maintains confidentiality of all YMCA information. 27. Performs other duties as assigned to by the lead teacher or site director.

Requirements

18 years of age to work without supervision (16 and 17 year olds must be directly supervised) Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing Organized and punctual Ability to monitor classroom and staff activities auditory and visually Reliable Transportation Must pass background check
